James Montgomery Flagg Vive La France! 1918. Poster advertises Bastille Day rally to benefit the French, reeling from mutinies after the failed Nivelle Offensive.  Under a crown of their national flags, allied soldiers are pictured forming a protective shield around the symbol of France, Marianne.  Marianne is identified not only by the tricolor but her wooden sabots. French workmen threw sabots to wreck the the gears of newly minted machines during the Industrial Revolution, hence the word sabotage. The current Marianne is Catherine Deneuve, One of the rarest of Flagg’s World War I posters.  41×28 near mint, conservation backed.
