Description

W. T. Benda Polish Army in France 1917.  Intrepid Polish color bearer, wearing the traditional four cornered rogatywka, carries a magnificent flag towards the German lines. At this time America was still neutral and Poles residing in the US. were encouraged to join their fellow countrymen fighting as part of the French army. The artist was himself a Polish emigrant who had been trained as an artist in Cracow. 5×28 near mint, conservation backed.
