Artist Unknown They Serve France – How Can I Serve Canada? With men and draft animals at the front, Frenchwomen are pictured bending to the arduous task of plowing fields by hand. This image was based on a famous photo by Brown Brothers widely published in Parisian and American newspaper to prick the conscience of viewers. Aulich comments “this is one of the most persistent images to emerge from the war and shows women harnessed to a plought to identify them with the land in the most literal of ways.” The same photo was also picked up by the famous American artist Edwin Penfield for an even larger poster. 36×24 mint, conservation backed.
