Westervelt: Men Wanted. U.S. Marines  c.1915.  Marines are illustrated landing on a tropical beach possibly in the turbulent Caribbean where they intervened several times to support governments there that were under attack from local insurgents who were, as a group, destabilizing the entire Caribbean region. These interventions took place in the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Haiti. The Haitian intervention lasted from 1915 until 1935. When the Marines landed in Nicaragua they fought against Augusto Cesar Sandino (assassinated February 1934), for whom the Sandanista leftist rebel group was named.  40×30
