Description

Strothmann Beat Back the Hun 1918.  Seriously lurid!  A bloodstained Hun is pictured menacing us from across the sea. His bloody bayonet and an evil stare add to the disturbing effect. A particularly harsh German occupation of neutral Belgium fueled stories of German misdeeds. Only weapons purchased with the money raised by bond sales could stop the Hun. Bilious greens and yellows contrast sharply with blood red (also used to highlight the word “hun” and increase the nightmarish quality of the artist’s vision. 27×18 near mint, conservation backed.
