Jes Schlaikjer “Where Skill and Courage Count: Signal Corps U.S. Army 1942. Operating behind enemy lines, an artillery observer relays enemy coordinates to G2 which send the info to forward artillery positions. As a result of this coordinated effort, American shells crash down on a Nazi tank column sheltering in a village. Schlaikjer was the official U.S. War Artist from 1942-1944, a position he won over Norman Rockwell who was described as an illustrator not an artist. We acquired our example from Schlaikjer’s son-in-law who inherited his estate. 25×19 mint, conservation backed.
