Description

Rogers Men of Valor 1943.  Poster honors the exploits of Victoria Cross winner Lt. Col. Merritt ‘last seen collecting Bren and Tommy Guns…preparing an offensive position which successfully covered withdrawal from the beach.’ The beach was Dieppe, a small village on the French coast, the site of an ill-fated amphibious assault by a group of 5000 Canadian and 1000 British commandos sent to investigate and destroy German radar installations in 1942. The raid was also mounted to test landing techniques and to assuage American and Russians suspicions when Britain declined to open a second European front after the invasion of Russia in 1941.  Merritt commanded the South Saskatchewan Regiment and was taken prisoner during the action. Scarce. 36×24 near mint, conservation backed.
