Description

Wesley Heyman Because Somebody Talked! 1944. Cocker spaniel rests its chin on its dead master’s navy scarf. Gold Star was awarded to mothers whose sons were killed in action. The art historical image of the sorrowing dog can be traced back to Edwin Landseer’s “The Old Shepherd’s Chief Mourner.” Nelson notes that this is one of the few unsolicited poster designs to be used in World War II. Requests for extra copies of this image broke all records. Now hard to find. 28×20 near mint, conservation backed.
