Description
Alonso E. Foringer The Greatest Mother in the World 1918. Dare we say it? This is truly the mother of all war posters. It’s powerfully proportioned composition was lifted directly from Michelangelo’s Pieta. The Red Cross nurse’s upturned face is a typical Renaissance image of the Virgin. The religious references in this poster are subliminal but doubtless contributed to the popularity of the image. 30×20 near mint, conservation backed.
