Description

Blashfield Untitled 1918. Spectacular image of Columbia waving soldiers into an inferno. Columbia is the American counterpart of Marianne, the French national symbol. Her bare feet miraculously step on molten ground promising protection as well as inspiration. Columbia’s Phrygian cap and the soldiers French-style helmets underscore our ties to the embattled French. Blashfield has few rivals in conveying the intensity of the combat. Very rare. 52×39 near mint, conservation backed.
