Description
Lt. Col. C. Dickson: The Marshalls 1945. A huge black cloud silhouettes the Marine seen sprinting across the atoll in the Marshalls, a reference to a stunning tragedy that rocked one of the Marshalls, an atoll named Roi. A thunderous explosion amazed troops after a Marine demolition team mistakenly hit a Japanese ammo magazine that also housed torpedo warheads. Twenty Marines were killed and over 100 wounded in the massive detonation that followed the hit. A pilot in the area thought the whole island had blown up. 40×28 near mint, conservation backed.
