Artist Unknown Help Protect Liberty’s Gateway by Buying War Savings Stamps. Quite possibly the most beautiful poster ever done for War Savings Stamps drives. It focuses on the dark image of a battleship in New York Harbor where only the vessel’s dark bulk and outline are visible. Black coal smoke issues from its stacks partially obscuring the battlewagon’s massive cage mast. The ship is shown only in silhouette at a distance commanding the approaches to the harbor floating on water that is colored red rather than blue. Far astern the skyline of New York City’s West Side basks in warm sunshine. Just below this naval scene a small cameo frames the Statue of Liberty’s hand holding her torch lighting the way to “Liberty’s Gateway.” 30×21 near mint, conservation backed.
