Description
Artist Unknown For Liberty. A Celebration of Independence (July 4, 1776). 1918. Dramatic French poster shows an ocean liner that’s been converted into a troop ship leaving New York harbor by night. It flies a large American flag from its bow where the ghostly figure of George Washington leads the way. Washington gestures to his right where a gigantic doughboy shares the deck with him. This bizarre night time scene is illuminated by a shaft of light emanating from the Statue of Liberty’s torch. At her feet New York’s skyline is just barely visible. Rare, new to us. 22×15 near mint, conservation backed.
