James Montgomery Flagg Wake Up America! Civilization Calls Every Man Woman and Child! 1917. As Columbia slumbers, the world in which she sleeps so soundly, erupts in smoke and flame. President Wilson won re-election on a Peace platform in 1916 and didn’t prepare for war until it was declared in April 1917. Undeterred, prewar patriotic groups fought Wilson’s isolationist policy with posters warning of the horrors of war which they knew we would soon fight. This poster, one of Flagg’s rarest, was printed and posted only in New York. 40×28 near mint, conservation backed.
