Fritz Erler Help Us Win 1916. A veteran’s vacant stare reflects the trauma of siege warfare. After visiting Verdun the artist was haunted by the pale faces of the exhausted soldiers whose lives were in constant danger. Although drawn from life, the irises of the soldier’s eyes are exceptional. Erler painted two tiny crosses. Important image used by the High Command a field postcards. In the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. 23×17 near mint, conservation backed.
