Description

Artist Unknown: Volkswacht 1942. Poster issued in 1942 by an ultra right wing collaborator group called ‘Volkswacht’.  These individuals were more extreme than the German Nazis. The poster announces an exhibition denouncing Masons, Jews and Bolsheviks. It was approved by the German ‘propaganda Abteiling’ (P.A. which is signed in the bottom corner.)  After the poster was printed the Germans feared a backlash as most Belgians still had positive feelings for their King (and the church), and one of the skulls depicts the king (korning). The other skulls represent the church (kerk) and the army (leger). The text continues: We take action to preserve our national inheritance and resist Jewry, Free Masonry and Bolshevism.  Because the Germans feared the exhibition would backfire they closed it and withdrew the Volkswacht posters.  Most were destroyed. Super rare if not a unique find.31X24 near mint, conservation backed.
