James Montgomery Flagg I Want You 1917. Iconic image of the artist as a commanding Uncle Sam. Flagg was 26 when he devised this image. He wrote that he was determined not to make Uncle Sam look like what her called “circusy” but serious and important. Thanks to its immense popularity it was reissuefd without the border and slightly modernized graphics. At the time FDR commented that Flagg showed wonderful sense by not hiring a model and using himself as the subject.
